About Chittorgarh
Chittorgarh is a historic city in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is situated on the banks of the
Berach and Gambhiri rivers and serves as the administrative headquarters of Chittorgarh District.
The city was the former capital of the Sisodia Rajput Dynasty of Mewar and is renowned for its rich
cultural heritage, bravery, and architectural excellence.
Origin
The origin of Chittorgarh dates back to the 7th century, when it was known as
Chitrakut, named after the local Rajput chieftain Chitrang.
From the 8th to the 16th century, it remained the capital of the Sisodia Rajputs.
Chittorgarh has witnessed several historic battles and sacrifices. In 1303, Sultan Alauddin Khilji
laid siege to the magnificent Chittorgarh Fort in an attempt to capture Queen Rani Padmini.
During the reign of Maharana Kumbha in the 15th century, the city flourished and became one of
the most prominent centers of Rajput power and culture.
Chittorgarh Fort
Chittorgarh Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spreads across approximately
700 acres with a circumference of nearly 13 kilometers.
Built on a hill overlooking the Gambhiri River, the fort is an outstanding example of Rajput
military architecture with influences of traditional Hindu and medieval architectural styles.
